Hundreds of Wigan borough’s youngsters are benefiting from summer holiday camps in their community thanks to local scheme.

The Fit and Fed scheme funded by Wigan Council, provides a safe space for our young people to get involved in lots of activities, catch up with friends whilst having a nutritious lunch provided.

Lots of organisations including Inspiring healthy lifestyles, Fur Clemt, Nomad Rangers, Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors Community Trust, along with the many volunteers come together to help deliver the sessions right across the borough.

A Fit and Fed session held at Dorset Road Community Centre saw over 50 children attend, and each child had the chance to take part in football, dance sessions, arts and crafts and they also completed the Daily Mile.

Stevie Grace Gaskell, aged 9, said: “I find it fun and every day we learn something different.

“The dinners are amazing, and we always have a good day.”

Denley, aged 8, said: “I have really enjoyed doing sports, arts and dance.

“The Fit and Fed sessions are fun, and I’ve made a bunch of new friends.”

Holly, aged 9, said: “I love it when we play dodge ball and I really enjoy doing art, that’s my favourite one.

“I like seeing my friends and being able to play fun things that I’ve never tried before.”

Cllr Jenny Bullen, cabinet member for children and young people’s services at Wigan Council, said: “Our Fit and Fed schemes is a great asset across the borough.

“Not only do they provide a nutritious lunch for children during the school holidays, but they also include an exciting programme to keep children busy and engaged, with the opportunity to try out a range of activities and learn new skills.

“The sessions are organised by volunteers, using schools and local centres, so that they are at the very heart of our local communities where children can make new friends, develop their abilities and have fun!.

“We are very grateful to everyone who has helped in any way to make our Fit and Fed camps so successful this summer.”

During the summer months residents can access meals for children at a number of places. Find more information on our Summer food provision for children webpage.
