When Lancashire Sings Project Celebration Concert

0

Brand new folk music produced by Lancashire pupils as part of the ‘When Lancashire Sings’ project will be celebrated soon at an event.

The free concert will be held at The Guild Hall, Preston, on Thursday 30 March from 6.30pm – 9pm.

The ‘When Lancashire Sings’ project aims to inspire young people to create modern folk music through learning about their local heritage.

Pupils are working alongside staff from Lancashire County Council’s heritage learning team, local historians, the award-winning The Young’uns folk group, and music producer Andy Bell to write and record folk songs.

This concert is being held to showcase the project, giving the pupils the opportunity to perform the eight songs they have created alongside The Young’uns.

The Young’uns will also be performing a selection of their own songs at the event.

County Councillor Marcus Johnstone, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for environment, planning and cultural services, said: “I’m really pleased that the children who are involved in this project will get the chance to display and be proud of what they have produced at the concert.

“I know that they have been putting a lot of effort in to creating their songs. Through the project, those taking part have explored Lancashire’s rich history and traditional oral storytelling. They have then been able to produce something contemporary which will also have an important legacy for both teachers and other young people.

“Our local history is too important to be allowed to be forgotten or untold. I think both the project and the concert will be really enjoyable for the children and something that they will be able to feel real pride about.”

A CD and a supporting resource book will be made available as a free MP3 and PDF teaching resource and will be launched in May. These will be used by schools to celebrate Lancashire’s history.

This project is a joint initiative between Lancashire County Council and The Young’uns Folk Group.

The schools that are taking part in this project are:

St James’ Church of England Primary School, Greenacre Street, Clitheroe

Central Lancaster High School, Crag Road, Lancaster
