Come along and view the exciting ideas for improving Sandy Lane Shopping Centre

0

People are to get the opportunity to go along and see the ideas from West Lancashire Borough Council which may be used to make Sandy lane Shopping Centre an even more inviting place. Included amongst the exciting options is a unique hanging feature above the arcade, which could be changed with seasonal displays. A professional artist may work with the local community to design and make the display.

Amongst the other suggestions, are planting a tree and installing some artwork on the ramp that could be lit up at night, as well as having improved lighting and signage.

The suggestions for the improvements came from an exciting programme of events which were held during the summer of 2014, when Sandy lane Centre became a hub of activity which hosted holiday activities for children, a Teddy Bears picnic and a Vintage and Handmade Fair. These were all parts of a process aimed at discovering what the local community, businesses and users felt about the Centre.

Feedback has been used to help in informing a design process which has resulted in the development of a range of themes which could be taken forward, once the funding has been secured, to improve the Centre.

The suggestions and ideas will be available for viewing and commenting by the public on the following dates and times, at Unit 63, Sandy Lane Shopping Centre, WN8 8LA:

  • Wednesday 18th February 11am–2pm
  • Tuesday 24th February 11am–4pm
  • Saturday 28th February 10am–1pm

Written feedback is always welcome and there will be forms available to collect from the Bella Uno café, Raffles Hairdresser and Martins Newsagent. Once completed the forms should be posted through the letter box at Unit 63 by 4pm on Monday 2nd March.

The Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council, Councillor David Westley, said ‘Sandy Lane Shopping Centre is an important part of the local community and we are aiming to make it an even better place for people to visit, work, and shop.’

The portfolio holder for Leisure, Councillor David Sudworth, said ‘We are very grateful to everyone who has already given us their ideas and comments about the centre. I would urge anyone who uses the centre to come and see the proposals and let us know what you think.’

A Friends of Sandy Lane group has been set up which will look for funding and for support for any of the ideas, to help to improve the facilities for the Sandy lane area and to work with any interested partners. The group are looking for new members who want to help to make their community an even better place. If you are interested you can contact Jenni Ashcroft either by emailing jenni.ashcroft@westlancs.gov.uk or by phoning West Lancashire Borough Council Arts Development Service on 01695 571328.

There is a free family drop-in holiday activity called ‘How does your garden Grow?’ being held by Unit 63 on Wednesday 18th February, from 11am to 3pm. This event will include a creative painting activity, with the completed artwork being installed throughout the centre.
