A poignant writing project which has shed new light on the experiences of people in north Lancashire during World War One will be celebrated in Preston this month.

An event will be held from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on Saturday 28 November at Lancashire Archives on Bow Lane to celebrate ‘Time and Tide’.

The creative work has uncovered hidden stories of life and death in Lancaster and Morecambe during the First World War and looked at the connections between our lives now and those a hundred years ago.

It is the result of the examination of coroners’ reports from 1914 to 1918, revealing how World War One affected local communities, and bringing to light untold stories of everyday life.

Over the past few months, residents have researched available reports of local people and recreated their life stories, helped by local poet, Sarah Hymas.

During the afternoon, there will be an opportunity to find out more about the project, and to listen to people who have been involved reading their work.

A display inspired by and showcasing the writing completed from this project will also be available. This installation has been created by local artist Lisa Wigham, and includes art, audio and print.

Victoria McCann, a Lancashire County Council senior archivist, said: “This project has been a great way to connect people with their local history and has given us another perspective on life on the home front.

“We’ve unearthed many stories, some very intriguing and others very unfortunate. Visitors will definitely gain a very realistic insight into the lives of local people, and importantly what happened to them.

“This event is a great opportunity to have a look at some rarely seen documents from Lancashire Archives and use them to discover the impact of war on everyday life.”

A booklet of the writing produced will be available on the day. The information will also be published online at www.timeandtide.xyz

The Time and Tide project has been funded by Arts Council England and the event has been organised by the Friends of Lancashire Archives.

It is free to attend but booking a place is required as refreshments will be provided.
