Thornton set for summer fun extravaganza

People are invited to an afternoon of summer fun, games and family entertainment to raise money for Teal Close Day Service and Thornton House Care Home on Saturday 11 August.

The summer fair, which begins at 2pm, will see a whole host of activities on the car park off Whimbrel Drive, Thornton Cleveleys.

A human fruit machine, tombola and raffle, face painting, hook a duck, a treasure hunt and the lollypop lotto are some of the activities people can enjoy on the day.

There will also be book and cake stalls, and entertainment from local singer Enya A’Barrown Smytheman, who works at Thornton House Care Home.

Admission to the summer fair is free and adults will receive a complementary glass of buck’s fizz on arrival. Activities are charged at £1 upwards, with proceeds going towards revamping the dementia memory garden, which is used by visitors to both Lancashire County Council-run services.

Kimberly Lord, acting registered manager for Thornton House, said: “People who use the care home and day centre love sitting in the garden. However it is looking a little tired now.

“We’re hoping to raise lots of money so we can give it a complete makeover.

“You can come and enjoy the games, buy some books or even have afternoon tea. Prizes include children’s play centre tickets, vouchers for Barton Grange and wrist bands for Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

“There will also be top music and entertainment from Enya A’Barrown Smytheman, who works here and sings many styles of music in local clubs.

“The funding will make a huge difference to people who use our services. Memory gardens can have a positive effect on people who need care support and particular people who live with dementia.

“We’d like as many people as possible to come down, show their support and help us raise money for a very good cause.”

Thornton House is a residential care home that provides 14 rooms for older people who need general care support and 13 rooms for people with dementia. There are also 18 community beds to support people to live independently again following a stay in hospital.

Teal Close Day Centre provides daytime support for older people and people living with dementia between 9.30am and 4.30pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. People can arrange places via social services or purchase them privately.
