Thinking of building your own home? Join new online register

0

An online register has been launched for people interested in building their own homes in Wigan Borough.

It will help support people in finding suitable sites for their homes as well as providing the council with important information that will be used to inform planning, housing and land use plans.

Mike Worden, Assistant Director of Planning and Transport, said: “The register will help us to find out how much demand there is for housing of this kind, enabling us to better meet local housing needs for the benefit of residents as well as people who want to move in to the borough.

“It will also give us a direct link with individuals and groups wanting to build their own homes at an early stage in the process so we can advise them about their eligibility and keep them informed about suitable sites.”

The register is open to those looking to build their own homes by a variety of means. This could be a self build project, where an individual or group buys land and builds their own home their home, with the help of an architect or builder, or it may be with a developer offering a custom home service, where they divide a larger site in to individual plots and provide an opportunity for buyers to customise their properties.

The council will contact individuals and groups on the register if a site meeting their requirements becomes available.
