The rise and fall of the Christmas selfie stick

The fastest selling Christmas gift of 2014, the selfie stick is now considered one of the worst presents to receive this festive period, a new UK poll for Barnardo’s has revealed.

While 44 per cent said the selfie stick was the second least wanted Christmas gift this year, unsurprisingly, musical socks (45 per cent), bathroom scales (33 per cent) and a set of saucepans (25 per cent) were also high on the list of unpopular gifts.

The research also reveals what we all suspected; a quarter (25 per cent) of presents are re-gifted to friends and family, whilst 39 per cent give their unsuitable gifts to a charity shop, 28 per cent hide and forget about them and 7 per cent throw them in the bin.

Barnardo’s is appealing for all unsuitable gifts to be donated to their shops to help transform the lives of the most disadvantaged children in the UK.

Javed Khan, Chief Executive of Barnardo’s said:

“Many of us may have received a festive gift this year that we didn’t like or was unsuitable. Instead of hiding them in the wardrobe, take them to one of our stores where they can be sold to help make a difference to the lives of thousands of vulnerable children and young people in the UK.

“Our stores are very grateful for all the donations they receive. What better way to start the New Year knowing that your unsuitable gifts will help disadvantaged children and families who can struggle over the Christmas period.”

The poll found that gifts were deemed ‘unsuitable’ because they weren’t something the person was interested in (38%), they disliked them (36%) or the item was the wrong size (23%).

Barnardo’s has over 640 retail stores in the UK which sell donated items including clothing, accessories, quality homeware, books CDs and DVDs.
