Help inspire the next generation!
That was the rallying call by one of the borough’s leading politicians at a special event to announce funding for local athletes will double over the next three years.
The Believe Talent Fund offers grants of up to £500 per year to athletes who live in Wigan and Leigh, to support them with outgoings such as travel costs and accommodation and allow them to compete on an international stage.
Wigan Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Chris Ready, said the £5,000 per year contribution to the talent fund as part of the Deal for Communities would now double to £10,000 until at least 2021.
Speaking at an event at Robin Park Arena this week, Cllr Ready said: “This funding was developed to allow our talented young athletes to compete on an international stage. It can help with travel costs, accommodation, training and equipment leaving the athlete to concentrate on giving it their best.
“Thanks to the success of the programme to date we’ve now doubled the amount for the next three years, meaning we can support more of our athletes than ever before. Hopefully, the athletes who benefit from the award will not only go on to achieve great things but also inspire a new generation.”
At the launch event more than 60 athletes who have already benefited from the scheme heard from Wigan’s own 800m star Jenny Meadows as well as the impacts the fund has had on local athletes and how they have been giving back to the community to help inspire the next generation. The fund has highlighted the amount of talent the Wigan borough has with applications coming from national and international standard athletes.
Lynsey Johnson, Head of Wellbeing for Inspiring healthy lifestyles, who manage the Believe Talent Fund, said: “We’ve heard so many inspirational stories tonight and this funding ensures many more successes to come.
“Wigan Council and Inspiring healthy lifestyles are committed to inspiring people to a healthier, happier life whatever their ability. This funding supports some of our most talented individuals and we hope it acts as a launch pad for even greater success.”
