Summer festivals health advice

Lancashire and South Cumbria’s, Cheshire and Merseyside’s lead doctor has given his top tips to stay healthy while attending festivals this summer.

Whether it’s squelching around in mud at a festival or dancing in the blistering heat the experience and atmosphere of the weekend can be amazing.

But NHS England Medical Director Dr Kieran Murphy warns that many people underestimate the strength of the sun and need to take steps to protect themselves against sunburn, heatstroke and dehydration.

He says: “It doesn’t take much sun to get severely burned when you’re outside all day, so it’s vital to protect yourself.

“My three top tips to keep safe and enjoy your festival are: wear a high factor sun cream and remember to reapply through the day; wear a hat to keep the sun off your head and neck; and finally most like a festival drink but remember to keep hydrated and drink plenty of water throughout the weekend.”
