Stay safe this Christmas season

0

It is the season for celebrating with friends and family which usually comes in hand with a glass or two of something alcoholic.

But stay safe this Christmas and reduce the risk of problems with excess drinking at this time of year.

There is a wide range of support and advice available out there on simple steps to minimise the potential risk and harm of excess drinking such as making sure to have plenty of water or non-alcoholic drinks in between alcohol.

If it gets a bit too heavy don’t forget there is a wide range of support available and is easily accessible at the HealthyRoutes on the High Street shops in Wigan and Leigh town centres.

There is also help and advice from Wigan and Leigh Recovery or try the National Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 which operates weekdays from 9am to 8pm and 11am to 4pm at weekends.

Or why not sign up for Dry January and make the effort to go alcohol free for 31 days. Studies show that people who give up alcohol for a month are less likely to drink to excess after abstaining.

And those who may consider using illegal drugs are urged to get support from Wigan and Leigh Recovery Partnership which also offers help to anyone who is misusing drugs. There is also advice available from Talk to Frank or the National Drug Helpline on 0800 024 1480 or text HELP to 66777.

Councillor Keith Cunliffe, portfolio holder for adult social care and health, said: “Christmas is a wonderful time to celebrate with friends and families but it can also be a time when people can feel that their drinking or drug use can get out of hand. But there is a wealth of support available from a wide variety of organisations who will help you tackle your problems.

“If you are someone who is already getting support for alcohol or drug misuse don’t forget the advice and help you have received is still there for you when you need it.”
