Over 30 primary schools from across St Helens went head-to-head at the annual Whittle Cup Sky Try rugby league competition held at Newton Le Willows Sports Club.

The event, run by St Helens RLFC in partnership with the St Helens Sports Development School Games team is always one of the highlights of the primary school sporting calendar, with over 270 Years 5 & 6 pupils, both boys and girls, taking part.

Spectators were treated to some fantastic displays of skill in both attack and defence, with one quarter-final match between Bleak Hill and Legh Vale lasting 40 minutes before finally being decided by a ‘golden point.’

After an enthralling group stage, the semi-finalists of the day were St Theresa’s who took on Holy Spirit and St Peter & St Paul went up against Legh Vale.

St Theresa’s and St Peter & St Paul triumphed in their semi-final to set up a thrilling show piece final which was won by St Theresa’s who made history by clinching their first ever Whittle Cup,  presented to them by Saints player Matty Fozzard.

St Helens School Games Officer Damian Keegan spoke about the tournament stating “Today has been a fantastic event showcasing all the hard work that the schools and local clubs have put in to coaching the pupils. The pupils have been a credit to their schools”

Gareth Friar from Community Saints added “the level of play on show here today has been very high. St Helens is a rugby league town and with the quality of the young pupils here and the support from teachers and clubs it’s not hard to see why.

“We hope to see a number of these young players going through the ranks and hopefully playing for the Saints one day.”
