Gary Garner of Radstock Grove, St Helens, was banned from keeping dogs for five years by St Helens magistrates (on 3 November) after admitting failing to provide veterinary care and causing unnecessary suffering to a six year old female boxer dog.

He was also given a 12 month community order and must complete 100 hours of unpaid work, – as well as paying costs of £336.80 and a victim surcharge of £60.

The dog – Zara – was found as a stray in an emaciated condition and handed over to St Helens Council’s Dog Welfare and Enforcement team.

Zara was found to have wounds to both her head and around her eyes. When examined she weighed just 11.9kg – less than half what she should have been. Tests suggested the dog had been starved over a long period of time.

Dog Warden Operations Manager Pauline Stone said: “We will enforce the Animal Welfare Act whenever possible – but we can only bring these matters to a successful conclusion if we have the dog in our possession. I would urge members of the public to contact our service right away when they find a stray dog.”

St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Green Smart and Sustainable Borough Councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron said: “As we approach Christmas, I would urge people to do their homework around the costs and needs of any animal that they may decide on as a pet.

“This is a sad case that led to a dog suffering through neglect – but one that hopefully acts as an eye-opener for other irresponsible owners.”

The Dog Welfare and Enforcement team deal with stray dogs, dogs acting in a dangerous manner and dog microchipping. To contact them call 01744 676299.
