Lancashire County Council are to propose a reduction to the speed limit on sections of two roads in Ormskirk from 40mph to 30mph. County Road and High Lane (A59) which has seen a number of serious accidents over the past few years and more recently two fatalities.

Cllr Nikki Hennessy said “What has been happening along this road has been tragic. Thanks to the local community we have been able to highlight there concerns with the county council and police to reduce the risks along the road. Although speed is not the only factor.

Reducing speeds will give drivers more time to react and evidence shows it can hopefully reduce the extent of injuries.”

“I would urge members of the public to respond to this consultation and help us help you.”

The junction of County Road (A59) and Southport Road (A570) north of the Five Ways junction, has also been identified as a high risk of accidents and proposals to reduce the speed limit along the Southport Road will also go out to public consultation shortly.

Cllr Nikki Hennessy said “We consulted local people on the traffic flow of the junction 18 months ago and reducing the speed of vehicles around the junction I believe can only be a good thing. We will however remain vigilant and any steps to make Ormskirk a safer place will be considered.”
