Residents urged to keep homes secure

0

Homeowners are being reminded to stay vigilant this summer and keep their properties secure following a number of burglaries.

So far in July, Lancashire Police has received 119 reports of burglary in a dwelling across West Division, including Lancaster, Morecambe, Blackpool and the Fylde.

Of these burglaries, 54 reports relate to homes being left insecure.

Officers want to remind homeowners to be vigilant – particularly when leaving windows open in hot weather.

Temp Det Sgt Neil Smith, of Lancashire Police, said: “Burglary is not a crime against the property but the person. It can have a truly devastating effect on how people feel in their own homes; often leaving that person feeling vulnerable, scared and anxious. It can also have a profound impact on the local community.

“We know that more than one in three burglaries happen when a property has been left insecure; and during the summer months when the weather is nice, people are more inclined to take extra risks, by leaving a window open for instance.

“We want to encourage people to take some simple steps to help themselves and reduce their chances of becoming a victim. The message from the campaign is clear: Be wise at home. Keep your windows and doors locked.”

To avoid becoming a victim of burglary, residents are advised to follow the following crime prevention advice:

  • Always make sure your windows and doors are locked, including side gates. Fit an alarm system, ensure it’s activated and add strong locks to sheds, garages and other outbuildings.
  • Consider putting valuables in a secure safe.
  • Think about leaving a light on when you go out. Timers will turn lights on and off at pre-set times.
  • Consider fitting outdoor security lighting.
  • Tidy the garden make sure that all garden tools and equipment are locked away. Spades are a favourite of burglars who use them to force windows and patio doors.
  • Security mark property using a permanent ultraviolet marker pen. If your property is recovered, the police are more likely to be able to get it back to you.
  • Join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in your area and if there isn’t one, consider starting one.
  • Sign up to Lancashire Constabulary’s free messaging service, In the Know, to receive crime alerts – including about burglaries – relating to their area.
  • Electronic devices left on show in vehicles, such as sat navs, MP3 players, mobile phones and laptop computers, account for the majority of goods stolen from vehicles.

To report anything suspicious please call 101 or 999 in an emergency.
