St Helens Council’s Music Service will be hosting a series of five summer concerts over as many days, featuring many young instrumentalists and vocalists from local schools, who contribute to the service’s ensembles and choirs.

Held at the Town Hall, from Monday 29 June to Friday 3 July, the concerts will demonstrate the work the young musicians have conducted as part of the BBC Ten Pieces project, an exciting initiative for schools led by BBC Learning and BBC Performing Groups, focusing on classical music and creativity.

Ten Pieces sees young people responding creatively to a set of ten compositions, including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 (1st Movement), Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4 (3rd Movement), to more contemporary pieces such as John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine, with their own musical interpretations.

They also have the freedom to explore the pieces through digital media or dance.

The Music Service is one of 240 Ten Pieces Champions nationwide, and works in partnership with local schools, building on the young people’s musical exploration of the pieces, encouraging a love of music and developing the confidence, creativity and collaborative skills of young people.

Concerts will run from 18:30-19:30, with doors opening at 18:00. Tickets can be bought at the door at £6 for adults and £3.50 for children.
