Owl’s reign of terror in Dutch city brought to an end

An owl, which had been labelled the ‘terror owl’ by the residents of a Dutch city, has been caught after it had attacked more than 50 people. Over the past year, the European eagle owl had been silently swooping from above and attacking the residents of Purmerend, north of Amsterdam.

Many of those who were attacked by the owl had been left bloodied and bruised.

In a statement from Purmerend City Council it was said that ‘The animal was trapped by a falconer. It’s in good health and is currently being kept in a temporary facility awaiting a transfer once a proper permanent home has been found.’

Following the attacks becoming widespread, local officials were advising residents to use umbrellas so that they could protect themselves.

Owl experts have said that the unusual behaviour of the owl had been caused by either being raised in captivity, or that it was due to heightened hormone levels at the start of the breeding season.

Mario Hegger, a city council member, has said that he had mixed feelings over the capture of the owl. Mr Hegger said, in a statement, ‘On the one hand, you would of course rather leave such a magnificent beast alone. But on the other hand, the situation could not continue. We had to do something.’
