From Halloween screams to looking for fantastic fungi there’s lots of fun to be had in West Lancashire’s parks in October.

West Lancashire Borough Council Rangers’ free events for the month start on Saturday 3 October with a clean up around the former Lydiate Station on the Cheshire Lines path. People taking part should meet at Lydiate Station off Altcar Lane at 10am.

On Sunday 11 October visitors to Beacon Country Park can enjoy Fantastic Foraging and Fungi, with David Winnard. Join David and the Ranger from 10am as they look for amazing species of fungi and plants on a walk around this lovely local park. They will be looking for some wild edibles around as well as looking for the things to avoid! A similar event takes place at Coronation Park, Ormskirk, on Saturday 17 October, starting at 2pm. Visitors can just come along to either event, as there is no need to book in advance.

Just before Halloween people can enjoy carving scary pumpkins on Monday 26 October, at Coronation Park, Ormskirk, starting at 2pm. Pumpkin carving sessions are also planned for Stanley Coronation Park, Skelmersdale, on Tuesday 27 October, at 10am and Richmond Park Burscough at 2pm on Tuesday 27 October. Booking is essential for the pumpkin carving. To reserve your place, please call 01695 570258 or 01695 622794.

The pumpkins will be dotted around Coronation Park, Ormskirk, on Halloween night and the best three will be given a prize that night.

There are plenty of scary goings on planned for the free Halloween extravaganza between 6pm and 8pm on Saturday 31 October, including scary walks through the woods with vampires and ghosts. There will be a spooky costumes competition, and rock band 909 will provide the musical entertainment for people to sing and dance along.

There are plenty of other exciting activities planned so make sure you don’t miss this spooktacular event.

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “Halloween night in Coronation Park, Ormskirk, will be a fantastic night of entertainment for all the family. There are other great free events in our parks this month so make sure come along and enjoy them.”

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all events. Please wear suitable footwear and clothing for the weather and ground conditions.
