A team of green-fingered, young gardeners have helped to transform part of Bewsey Community Park thanks to funding from the council’s central neighbourhood board.

The children, from Bewsey Lodge Primary School, were taught how to weed the beds, use tools appropriately and how to plant herbs correctly.

Funding was awarded to The Friends of Bewsey Community Park Centre for the gardening project to plant a new bed with herbs in the park.

The school children, with support from people taking part in a personal development programme called Roots to Wellbeing, weeded the beds and replanted them with herbs such as Rosemary and thyme. The children’s final task of the day was to plant summer shrubs in pots to take home to their parents.

Cllr Kate Hannon, executive board member for leisure, community and culture, said: “This was a brilliant opportunity to get young people involved in a community project they can be really proud of. They were taught essential gardening skills that will help them in the future and we are all delighted with the result which is something everyone can enjoy when they visit the park.”

This project was undertaken as part of the ‘Delivering Wellbeing in Bewsey and Dallam’ project with the council’s Central Neighbourhood services, Roots to Wellbeing/ Groundwork, Friends of Bewsey Park and children from Bewsey Lodge Primary School.
