The new memorial building and heritage centre at Knowsley Cemetery is starting to take shape.
The steel structure forming the frame of the building at the cemetery at Foxes Bank Lane, Whiston, has been erected, as supporters bid to raise the rest of the money needed to complete the build.
Whiston Initiative in Cultural Heritage (W.I.C.H) group has collected £29,000 towards the project, but still needs to raise a further £71,000 to fund the remaining work.
Local businesses have been supporting the project with steel engineers PP Fabrications Ltd, supplying and constructing the framework at a reduced cost and Vinci Construction completing the £35,000 foundation installation free of charge.
Knowsley Council is now working closely with the group and partners to enable the centre to be completed and provide a unique space for cemetery visitors.
The multi-faith community building will feature original artefacts from the old chapel that originally stood at Whiston Hospital. There will also be a book of remembrance.
A number of fundraising events are being planned over the coming months. More details can be found on www.wichfoxsbank.co.uk.
