The third annual Harry Potter Book Night was recently celebrated throughout the world and as before St Helens Central Library hosted an unforgettable evening, this time themed around the Professors of Hogwarts.

Over 150 young witches and wizards of all ages entered the library through Platform 9 ¾ before being sorted into their Hogwarts Houses by the library’s own Sorting Hat, receiving their own House badges.

Fancy dress was encouraged, and the best dressed – Jack Lee, 8, from Haresfinch – won a copy of the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

There were crafts including wand and balloon owl making, games like Quidditch played in the Great Hall, and readings from the books in Hagrid’s Hut with Professor Dumbledore – played by one of the young volunteers of the Reading Hack group, which supported the event in planning and delivery.

Event-goers also met some majestic owls and birds of prey in the library’s Owlery, displayed by HawksRUs, and became wanted witches and wizards with the “Have you seen this wizard” prop.

Councillor Jeanie Bell, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, with responsibility for libraries, said: “The Harry Potter stories continue to delight children and adults alike so I’m thrilled that Central Library and the Reading Hack volunteers could host such a great event, letting local families experience the magic for themselves and get involved in libraries in new and wonderful ways.”
