***Issued on behalf of the Lord-Lieutenant’s office***.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire, The Lord Shuttleworth KG KCVO, will be officially presenting The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service to five volunteer groups.

This is the MBE for groups of volunteers who work in their local community for the benefit of others.

The award ceremony will be held on Wednesday 27 September at County Hall in Preston.

Each of the groups will receive a certificate signed by HM The Queen and an exclusive commemorative crystal, presented by Lord Shuttleworth.

Lord Shuttleworth said: “This year the Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service in Lancashire have been won by five groups. They include hundreds of volunteers who work to improve and support local communities in health, welfare and community building, and in providing park-based leisure from an otherwise derelict piece of land.

“This year Lancashire volunteers have been recognised for their exceptional service to a community overseas.

“Their vision, hard work and persistence have improved the lives of thousands and I look forward to presenting them with their Awards on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen.”

This prestigious UK national honour recognises outstanding voluntary contributions and sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering, with the work of those awarded being judged to be of the highest standard.

Forty-eight groups from Lancashire have now received this annual award since it was created by Her Majesty to mark the occasion of her Golden Jubilee in 2002.

The Abaseen Foundation UK, Lancaster – received the award for excellent work transforming and saving lives, providing inclusive health care and education in a deprived region of Pakistan.

Civic Pride, Rossendale – received the award by using a dedicated army of volunteers to ensure that Rawtenstall is litter free, and through countless planting projects, has helped the town to look its best all year round.

The Fairfield Association, Lancaster – received the award for creating and maintaining 50 acres of green land in Lancaster. This incredibly popular space includes a play area, community orchard and nature reserve, providing exercise and quiet havens for thousands of local people.

National Coastwatch Institution, Rossall Point – received the award for undertaking valued volunteer work in conjunction with organisations like the RNLI, to make sure all users of the coast in their area are safe, and have taken on the responsibility previously undertaken by HM Coastguard. This area includes some 250 square miles of treacherous patches of sea and sand.

The Swallows Head & Neck Cancer Support Group, Blackpool – received the award for providing vital information, support and awareness for Head & Neck cancer patients living in the North-West of England. It provides 24 hour telephone support for patients and carers and also raises funds to enable the Ear, Nose & Throat Department at the local hospital to purchase vital equipment.
