Local businesses reminded of rights of young workforce

Sefton Council is taking part in a national awareness campaign to champion the rights of the borough’s child workforce.

As part Child Employment Awareness Month in April, Sefton Council has dedicated 23-27 April to its own week long awareness campaign to make local businesses and the wider community aware of the rights of child workers and their obligations.

Dwayne Johnson, Director for Social Care at Sefton Council, said:

“The experience and lessons learned in the world of work can be invaluable to young people aged 13-16, but it is important that businesses understand the age they can legally employ a young person and the extent of the demands that they can place on them.

“I would urge all businesses to consider whether the demands placed on their young workforce can reasonably be called light work, as bye laws state, making sure they only work up to 12 hours per week, enjoy an hour’s break every four hours and don’t work before 7am or after 7pm”

Child Employment Awareness Month is organised by the National Network for Children in Employment and Entertainment (NNCEE), a voluntary organisation providing advice and guidance to specialists in the children’s social work sector.
