St Helens students are celebrating their successes in today’s A-level results – marking a year of excellent academic achievement.

Between them, St Helens secondary schools and Carmel College saw 53.3 per cent of A level entries graded at A*-B – exceeding the national average of 52.7 per cent. A total of 99 per cent of entries were graded A*-E – again, higher than the national average of 98.1 per cent.

Carmel College saw its proportion of A*-B grades rise to 57.7 per cent, while Cowley, Rainhill and Sutton secondaries celebrated double digit improvements in their A*-B figures.

St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Jeanette Banks, said “I am thrilled with these outstanding results achieved by our young people. These results demonstrate that St Helens schools and colleges are providing high quality education and, more importantly, that students are supported to achieve their very best. The hard work and commitment demonstrated by these young people throughout the year cannot be
underestimated, and today is a celebration of their achievements. Well done to all.”

Carmel College Principal Rob Peacock said: “It has been a great day today celebrating another terrific set of results. Our results bucked the national trend with increases in the proportions of high grades and I was particularly pleased with the number of A* grades achieved. It has been a privilege to chat to our young people as they move on to the next stage of their careers. This year we also have a record number of students going on to Oxford or Cambridge universities.”

John Pout, Head teacher at Rainhill High, said: ““These are an excellent set of results. We have increased the number of the highest grades up by 16 per cent on 2014. This is bucking the national trend. More students than ever before have got into the top (Russell Group) Universities.”

At Rainford Headteacher Ian Young said: “We’re delighted with the results and that so many of our young people have achieved life-changing grades. It is fantastic to see our students so pleased with the results of their hard work and looking forward to the next steps on their journey.”

Matt Hesketh, Director of Post 16 Learning at Cowley, added: “This year is a personal best for Cowley Sixth Form. We have seen the number of top grades achieved increase by 13 per cent and our IB scores continue to be well above the world average.

I am thrilled with today’s results and to report that 100 per cent of our students who applied to university have been offered a place.”

St Helens Council’s Director of Children’s Services, Andy Dempsey, commented: “I continue to be extremely pleased with the performance of our young people, whether with A level or with vocational qualifications and apprenticeships. Collectively students and staff have worked as a real team, and individually we have seen some wonderful performances. Everyone at St Helens Council wishes our students the very best of luck on their
next steps in education, employment or training.”
