Fancy improving your fitness but not sure where to start? Then Active West Lancs has a programme that could really help you hit your stride.

Active West Lancs is running a free 12-week ‘Couch to 5k’ programme at Our Lady Queen of Peace Engineering College in Skelmersdale between 7pm and 8pm on Monday and Wednesday evenings, starting on 8 May.

The course is aimed at walkers who would like to begin running. So if you fancy getting some air into those lungs of yours, then you can sign up to this programme via the website www.runtogether.co.uk. Participants must register online prior to attending the first session.

Week one will start with brisk walking and short 60-second breaks of running, building up slowly week by week to achieve 30 minutes of running by the end of the programme. There’s no pressure whatsoever, you just work at your own pace and build up gradually.

Feedback from past participants on similar programmes has been really positive, with lots of people reporting an improvement in fitness, sleep, general well-being and weight-loss in addition to being able to get round 5k.

Dave Tilleray, West Lancashire Borough Council Director of Leisure and Wellbeing, said: “If watching the London Marathon has inspired you to get running then the ‘Couch to 5k programme’ is a great way for you to start on the right foot. Don’t worry, you won’t be expected to be able to run long distances. The programme is aimed at people who want to begin running, so sign up today and come along to our fun and friendly sessions.”

Active West Lancs is a partnership commissioned by Lancashire County Council to deliver a three year programme to improve health and wellbeing across West Lancashire, and the Borough Council is one of the main partners. .

The Skelmersdale ‘Couch to 5k’ programme is supported by Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust.
