The sweet pea talks have proved very popular at Chorley Flower Show

People of all abilities and interests in gardening are being invited to learn about sweet peas and have the chance to plant seeds that could see you exhibit at Chorley Flower Show.

The National Sweet Pea Society are celebrating their involvement in the award-winning Chorley Flower Show by hosting a special event in the Walled Garden, in Astley Park.

The society will be on hand to host demonstrations, seed sowing, potting up and planting so people can grow their sweet peas to take part in the summer show. There will also be free cultural slideshows.

Tom Atherton, Events Coordinator for the National Sweet Pea Society and who lives in Chorley, said it was fantastic to have the flower show and feels these types of events in the run up will help it to gain popularity.

“The event we are holding in April is to make people more aware of sweet peas and help to build the excitement ahead of the main show,” said Tom.

“This is the perfect time to be looking at what you might be planting, whether for the sweet pea show itself or the amateur section of the main event and you never know you may sow an award-winning entry.

“It really will be a fun event for people of all abilities and ages so make sure you make time to come along and help build Chorley’s reputation as the Northern Flowerhouse.”

The sweet pea awareness event will give people the chance to learn all about sweet peas and hear from some of the most knowledgeable people in the country.

It promises to be fun for people of all ages and abilities and people can just turn up anytime between 10.30am and 4pm on Friday and Saturday 7 and 8 April.

Councillor Alistair Bradley, Leader of Chorley Council, said: “It’s a real honour and a sign of the flower show’s prestige for a national society to want to host a regional competition here in Chorley.

“It is likely to attract many more visitors to Chorley from across the North West and beyond and will add even more quality to what is being widely regarded as one of the best shows in the country after just two years.

“We are really excited by how this year’s show is shaping up and we’ll be revealing more details in the coming weeks.”

Chorley Flower Show will be held on Friday and Saturday 29 and 30 July.
