If you’re a budding photographer who lives, works, volunteers or studies in Knowsley then now’s the time to take up the challenge and have a go at capturing a winning image of a person or place that makes you feel good.

This is the second year of Knowsley Council’s wellbeing photography competition – Spaces, which last year saw hundreds of amazing images being submitted.

The idea of Spaces 2 is to take a compelling image of somewhere in Knowsley, or someone, that is important to you. If could be somewhere you go to relax, a place that holds happy memories, or a person who you admire or makes you feel good. It might even be a ‘selfie’ – what it is of, is up to you!

Free photography workshops

If you’re interested in taking part in Spaces 2 but would like a little help with your photography you can even take part in free photography workshops being offered by Knowsley Council’s Culture Development and Events Service, in partnership with Knowsley Family and Community Education (FACE).

The sessions are for over 16s only and are free. They take place in Kirkby Gallery (within the Kirkby Centre, Newtown Gardens) and are taking place on:

Wednesday, 13 July 1-4pm
Thursday 14 July 1-4pm
Wednesday 20 July 1-4pm
Thursday 21 July 1-4pm

To book your place on the workshops, email knowsleygallerybookings@gmail.com or call Tina Ball on 0151 443 5617.

How do I enter Spaces 2?

Pick up an entry form at Kirkby Gallery, Huyton Gallery or Prescot Museum, or contact Tina Ball on 0151 443 5617. You can download the form from www.knowsley.gov.uk/things-to-do/museums-and-galleries/exhibitions/spaces-competition or post your photographs to the Knowsley Galleries and Museum Facebook page www.facebook.com/knowsleygalleriesandmuseum

Entries received will be displayed in an online gallery on the Knowsley Galleries and Museums Facebook page, and later will form part of the Panorama exhibition in Kirkby Gallery this November.

Cllr Eddie Connor, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Wellbeing and Customer Services, said: “Last year the standard of entries into the Spaces competition was incredible – so I’m really looking forward to seeing what people do with this year’s competition.

“You don’t need to be a professional photographer to take part – we had some amazing photographs submitted last year that were simply snapped on a mobile phone. The key is to give some thought as to what or who you want to photograph – it has to be somebody or somewhere that really means something to you.

“I hope that, as well as getting out and enjoying some photography, the competition will prompt people to start thinking about the things in life that make them feel good and improve their sense of wellbeing. Once you’ve decided the place or person you want to photograph it might even remind you to spend more happy times with them!”

For more information about Spaces, contact Tina Ball on 0151 443 5617 or email tina.ball@knowsley.gov.uk.

The deadline for entries is 16 September 2016.
