Keep up recycling over the summer

Lancashire County Council is urging people not to ‘take a holiday’ from their usual good recycling habits over the summer.

More waste is often produced as people buy more while they enjoy days out, host gatherings such as BBQs, and entertain children during school holidays.

There’s lots of information about how you can make a difference by reducing what you waste, and reuse and recycle more, on Lancashire County Council’s website.

The council estimates that if everyone put the right thing in the right bin Lancashire’s recycling rate would go up by 16%.

County Councillor Charlie Edwards, lead member for health and adult services, said: “While we’ve recently been basking in a heatwave, we shouldn’t take a holiday from recycling.

“Every little action that we can take will make an impact on our recycling rates, which means we send less waste to landfill, and any savings to the council can be spent on the services we rely on.”

Some top tips include:

• Take reusable water bottles on days out, and avoid creating plastic waste and save money by taking your lunch in a reusable tub.
• When on days out, bring home things you could easily recycle such as empty drink or sun cream bottles and put them in your recycling box or bin.
• Use a rainy day to have a clear out and take anything you don’t need to a charity shop to be reused rather than putting it in the bin.
• If you’re hosting a BBQ, avoid using single use plastic plates and cutlery.
• If you’re going away on holiday, fill up small reusable bottles for toiletries rather than buying travel size items.
• Get a composting bin. With everything in the garden shooting up over summer it’s an ideal time to start composting at home.
• Turn rubbish into “art” – lots of recyclable items are well-suited to getting children to use their imagination in making crafts, and can be recycled afterwards.
