Information appeal made after man is knocked unconscious after being hit with pool cue in Wigan

0

An appeal for information has been made by police after a man was knocked unconscious after he was attacked with a pool cue in Wigan. The 20 year old man and a 22 year old friend were viciously attacked close to a railway bridge on Warrington Road after they had walked across Alexandra Park in Newtown, at around 9.30pm on Saturday 18th April 2015. The two men had been on their way home following a night out, but while they had been walking through the park the men were confronted by another man, who very quickly became verbally aggressive.

In an effort to avoid any trouble, the two friends walked away and onto Warrington Road so that they could continue on their journey home. However, as they made their way under the railway bridge, the friends were once again confronted by the man, only this time he was with three or four other men. The aggressive man was also this time armed with a pool cue.

The aggressive man has used the pool cue to hit both men in their heads, which knocked the 20 year old man unconscious. The other man was also knocked to the floor and as both men lay defenceless on the floor, they were repeated punched and kicked until members of the public, who upon realising the levels of violence, intervened and broke up the attack. This has then prompted the offenders to run off back towards Alexandria Park.

Both of the victims received treatment later in hospital for their injuries to their face and heads.

The offender who had the pool cue has been described as being white, about 5ft 10 in tall, skinny and he had been wearing black clothing. One of the other offenders was also white, about 5ft 5in tall and he had been wearing a black top, black trousers and black shoes. Another of the offenders is said to have been wearing a green hooded top, while another had been riding a BMX or mountain bike.

Detective Constable Brendan Greally said ‘This was a vicious and unprovoked attack on two men who had been on a night out and were minding their own business. They were confronted by the offender who, mistakenly believing they had said something, rounded up some of his ‘friends’ to take part in a totally unnecessary and brutal attack on the two victims, attacking them with a pool cue and then repeatedly punching and kicking them while they lay on the ground.

‘By any stretch of the imagination, it was a savage attack that left two men needing hospital treatment so we need to find the culprits. I would urge anyone who either recognises the offenders from the descriptions we have given, or who witnessed the attack itself which happened near to the railway bridge on Warrington Road, to come forward.

‘We need to establish who these men are so we can arrest them and give the victims some sense of justice.’

Anybody who has got any information can contact police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
