St Helens Council’s Adult and Community Learning team has joined other national adult education providers in taking part in a government funded mental health research project to test the effects of community learning on mental health.

As part of the Learn to Grow wellbeing programme, St Helens Adult and Community Learning has been able to deliver over 100 courses over the past 18 months, with more than 250 learners benefitting from the wide range of courses on offer.

Ranging from photography and positive thinking classes – to card making and creative writing – the free courses have also opened up volunteering and further education opportunities, while others have moved on to access provision from our partner organisations.

Over 90 per cent of those taking part in the programme have rated the courses as excellent, with 80 per cent saying they felt more positive about themselves, and almost 90 per cent recording that they had gained new skills and knowledge as a result.

St Helens Council’s cabinet member for public health and wellbeing, Councillor Jeanie Bell said: “Feedback from the project so far has been overwhelmingly positive, with learners commenting on how they feel a lot calmer and have made new friendships with fellow learners.

We have been working closely with partners to make sure we reach those who can benefit most and people can self refer or be referred in by a service provider they are accessing.

“I would encourage anyone who thinks they would benefit from this programme to contact our friendly team of staff who would be more than happy to help find the right course for you.”

Phase two of Learn to Grow is now underway, with a fantastic pre-Christmas range of courses open to anyone suffering from low mood and/or anxiety.
