A major east Lancashire Road has reopened thanks to the speedy work of Lancashire County Council engineers.

The A59, near Clitheroe, was closed for emergency work after a collision between a van and a fuel tanker.

The accident took place on Wednesday morning and led to the road being closed in both directions.

It reopened this morning at 5am after extensive resurfacing and lining work.

Peter Mason, senior highways engineer, praised the team for its hard work and effort.

He said: “I would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in the A59 oil tanker emergency resurfacing work, which was completed in such a short space of time.

“This is a very busy stretch of road and the closure was causing major disruption, particularly on Wednesday afternoon and on Thursday. However, thanks to the hard work carried out by our LCC team and subcontractors, the A59 was only closed to traffic for a minimal amount of time.

“We received information from the police about the collision on Wednesday at around 11.30am. Our LCC team and subcontractors managed to clean-up, evaluate, organise and execute the resurfacing and lining of a sizable stretch of the A59, and open the road to traffic in the early hours of Friday morning.

“There was a considerable amount of work involved and our LCC team were really impressive, working hard to get the road open as soon as possible.

“The completed resurfacing work is a real credit to our resurfacing and lining team. The finished product is excellent.”
