Sefton Council is launching Heritage Trails in Southport and Waterloo to encourage residents and visitors to explore the historic environment around them.

Showcasing a diverse range of sites and monuments, picked by local history groups and civic society, the trails will allow users to explore the borough and learn more about its past, unique features and individual architecture.

It is hoped that the trails will help improve community understanding and participation in heritage work, developing links with local colleges to enhance conservation skills such as recording the historic environment.

The trails, part of the Council’s Heritage at Risk project, is a collaborative effort between The Atkinson, Historic England, Sefton Council and various local community groups.

Cllr Daren Veidman, Cabinet Member Planning and Building Control and Heritage Champion, said: “I am delighted to announce the launch of the Heritage Trails in Southport and Waterloo.

“The walking information trails will increase awareness of our boroughs fantastic history amongst residents and visitors alike, improving the local economy and developing our educational offering.

“Sefton borough is blessed with a wonderful history and projects such as this are vitally important in protecting our Conservation Areas at Risk.

“I would like to thank all of those involved in helping this project come to fruition.”

Karl Creaser from Historic England said: “We are really pleased to be supporting Sefton Council’s work on Conservation Areas at Risk and in promoting the tourist potential of Sefton.

“We believe the collaborative approach, which involves working closely with the local authority, Friends Groups and Civic Societies is the right way to strengthen ownership of the Heritage Trails.

“We hope the people of Southport get involved in attending the launch of this project at the Atkinson on March 17 and finding out more about how they can get involved.”

The Heritage Trails project will be launched at the Atkinson on Thursday, March 17 and will include a photography lecture by a Historic England specialist, who will be on hand to pass on any tips to members of the community.
