A North West radio station has topped the charts for a record-breaking 10th year – with a little help from some of the world’s best-known pop stars.
New figures released today put Smooth Radio North West at the top of the charts giving the station a record number of reasons to celebrate. A mix of timeless classics coupled with hits from current artists such as Ed Sheeran has helped rocket the station to success and put it top of the leader board for the 10th year in a row.
Not only has the station seen its adult listener numbers increase to a whopping 1,066,000, it remains the number one commercial station in the North West – a position it has now held for a decade, a feat unmatched by any other commercial station in the region. The station is also currently the outright number one outside of London.
There have also been rises in the number of adult listeners for the Smooth Breakfast and Smooth Drive shows, with a staggering 504,000 adult listeners tuning in for breakfast and 430,000 adult listeners at teatime.
The news was unveiled in quarterly figures released by Radio Joint Audience Research (RAJAR) and Jamie Griffiths, Group Brand Programme Director for Smooth Radio, said the range of music played was just one of the factors in the station’s decade of success.
“We’re the only North West commercial radio station to have ever attracted a million weekly adult listeners, something we’ve been consistently achieving for a number of years. To now be hitting 1,066,000 adult listeners a week is beyond anything we’d hoped for and a large part of our success is down to our choice of music. Smooth Radio North West is all about good songs and, time and again, we deliver what our listeners want.
“Two of our shows – Breakfast and Drive time – separately reach more weekly adult listeners than some commercial stations in the region. That’s because we’re all about music, consistently delivering artists our audience wants to hear with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Lionel Richie, Adele, and the late George Michael just some favourites.”
Smooth Radio North West draws its listeners from across Merseyside, Cheshire, and Greater Manchester. But despite 10 years at the top, the station’s team are not content to sit back.
“The first year we were voted top commercial radio station in the North West was amazing. And then we did it again, and again, and again. The station continues to grow, and our listeners continue to enjoy our style of music. But, like many of the artists we play, we’re always striving to achieve more, and we hope to see our listenership continue to grow, whilst we attempt to hold on to that number one spot,” added Jamie.
