Council supports community clean up to pick up the plastic and other litter

0

West Lancashire Borough Council is supporting community groups looking to clean up their neighbourhoods.

A national Great Plastic Pick Up campaign involving Keep Britain Tidy is running from 11 May-14 May 2018. This aims to encourage people across the country to clear plastic, cans and general litter from streets, countryside areas and beauty spots and dispose of it safely.

Community groups and local residents who are organising a clean-up of their local area to support the campaign and require resources such as bin bags and litter pickers can contact Michelle Williams, the Council’s Street Scene Operations Manager, by email michelle.williams@westlancs.gov.uk or on 01695 577177 ext 5449.

The Council is also appealing to residents to help prevent litter by disposing of their rubbish properly. It costs more than £1 million a year to clear litter up – and most litter is dropped by local people. We can all help by asking children, family and friends not to drop it.

West Lancashire has an Environmental Enforcement Team who look out for littering and fly tipping across the Borough. The officers provide a daily uniformed patrol across the Borough.

Our Environmental Enforcement Officers can issue £75 fixed penalty notices for offences like dropping cigarettes and chewing gum or dropping litter in the street or from cars.

Councillor Kev Wilkie, portfolio holder for Street Scene, said: “Nobody likes to see litter on the streets and we can all our do our bit to help whether by taking part in a community clean-up campaign or disposing of our litter properly.”
