Consultation planned to make Leyland road safer

0

A consultation is set to take place into plans to improve the safety of a Leyland road for cyclists.

The proposal aims to prevent motorists from entering or exiting Golden Hill Lane from Chapel Brow.

The move follows a high number of cyclists being struck by vehicles when they have turned right out of Chapel Brow on to Golden Hill Lane.

Under the scheme vehicles would still be able to use Chapel Brow, which will be made two-way, to reach businesses and homes.

A turning head would also be created at the mouth of the existing junction.

All the current parking facilities in Chapel Brow would be retained under the scheme.

There are no plans to pedestrianise the area.

The proposal also provides for a Toucan crossing on Golden Hill Way.

County Councillor Keith Iddon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “The number of accidents involving cyclists when vehicles turn right from Chapel Brow to Golden Hill Lane is a cause for concern.

“This proposal aims to make this area of the town safer for all who use it.

“There will be a full consultation into this scheme during which we will be keen to hear what local people and businesses think about this issue.

“No final decision will be made until we have taken into consideration their responses.”

There have been eight cycling casualties at the junction of Chapel Brow and Golden Hill Lane between 2012 and 2017.
