Armed forces veterans and children from a from Elm Tree Community Primary School will be helping West Lancashire Borough Council to raise the Commonwealth Flag at a special ceremony to mark Commonwealth Day on Monday 9th March.

The celebrations will be getting under way at around 9.45am when West Lancashire Mayor, Councillor Doreen Stephenson, Council Leader, Councillor David Westley as well as other civic dignitaries will be joined by veterans, children, parents and teachers outside of the Council Offices at 52 Derby Street, Ormskirk.

There will be messages from the Commonwealth Secretary-General and the Queen being read out, and also the Mayor will be addressing those who are in attendance.

There will be a specially-written Commonwealth Affirmation being read before the flag is raised at 10am. There will be a lucky pupil who will assist with the raising of the flag.

The Commonwealth Flag raising event of this year will be building on the highly successful inaugural events in 2014, and it will see more than 650 other Commonwealth Flags raised in 38 Commonwealth countries. This has captured the imagination of thousands of participants from around the world, and enabled people of all ages to join with others in associating themselves with widespread public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth and appreciation of the values it stands for.

Councillor Stephenson said ‘I am really pleased the Council has arranged this ceremony and proud that West Lancashire will be joining people across the world in raising the Commonwealth Flag.’
