Commemorate VE Day’s 70th Anniversary

0

May sees the 70th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, marking the end of the Second World War on the continent.

To highlight this, there will be a two minute’s silence in Victoria Square on Friday 8 May at 3pm for reflection and remembrance. National VE Day celebrations will follow from 8-10 May, to commemorate this momentous historical event.

On VE Day 1945, millions of people across the UK shared an unprecedented moment of relief and euphoria as they heard that the war in Europe was over. Britain could finally catch its breath and start to think about how it would rebuild. Within every community today there are people who remember that day.

Following the moment of silence, St Helens will participate in the lighting of a nation-wide chain of beacons on the evening of 8 May, at 9:32pm on Taylor Park Hill. The beacons were last lit in 1995 to mark the 50th Anniversary of VE Day.

Communities across Britain are also being encouraged to celebrate during the commemorative period by holding street parties, just like those that took place in 1945.

St Helens Council will assist with the road closures deemed necessary, but requests must be submitted as soon as possible to the council’s Traffic and Road Safety Section.

To receive an application pack including all the information and guidelines, please call 01744 676852 or email traffic@sthelens.gov.uk.

Postal requests can be sent to Traffic and Road Safety Section, Wesley House, Corporation Street, St Helens, Merseyside, WA10 1HF. All applications must be returned by Friday 17 April.
