Lovers of Christmas markets in Wigan Borough will no longer have to travel to the likes of Manchester and Liverpool to join in some festive market fun.
As part of its commitment to supporting its town centres, Wigan Council has teamed up with market operators Groupe Geraud to bring the two Christmas markets to Leigh and Wigan town centres in November and December.
In Leigh the festive market will be held in Bradshawgate and will run from Monday 7th November to Saturday 19th November.
In Wigan the Christmas Market will be held in Standishgate, Wigan from Friday 25th November to Tuesday 20th December.
The markets, which will operate between 10.30am and 5pm with later opening hours to 7pm on selected days, will include mulled wine, minced pies, seasonal sweets like gingerbread and crepes along with a range of international goods such as freshly served German Bratwurst sausages. They will also showcase handmade goods, accessories, household items, clothing and much more.
Groupe Geraud is one of the biggest operators of markets in Europe which has previously supplied successful Christmas markets to Liverpool, Keswick, Cheltenham and Sunderland.
John McInnes, Business Development Manager at Groupe Geraud, said: “Our past two events in Leigh have been really successful so it’s great to bring markets to Leigh and Wigan town centres and continue our relationship with Wigan Council.
“Our festive events are a real treat, they look great and really get people into the Christmas spirit, they’re always really successful and we expect the same in Leigh and Wigan.”
Councillor David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We are very excited to be bringing Christmas markets to Leigh and Wigan this festive period and I cannot wait to see the town centres full of people enjoying the markets.
“Christmas markets are the perfect place for people to get in the Christmas mood.
“I’m sure residents from the borough and further afield will enjoy tasting the delightful festive foods and sipping a glass of mulled wine on a crisp winter evening. It will also be a great place to pick up that special Christmas gift.
“At Wigan Council we are committed to supporting our town centres as destinations for shoppers and visitors to enjoy and the Christmas markets are a great part of that offer.”
