Children learn to keep safe from Sexual Exploitation at town centre market event

Young people learned more about keeping safe at a pop-up children’s safety event in St Mary’s Market on Saturday 18 March run by St Helens Council’s Youth Service and Catch 22 on Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) Day.

Catch 22 is commissioned by the council to undertake one-to-one support work with young people affected by CSE, and engage with those deemed at risk of CSE, working with the Youth Service to do so.

Children enjoyed quizzes, fun games and activities provided throughout the day to parents and young people to help raise the awareness of the signs of grooming and how to stay safe online and outside.

Community Support Officers from Merseyside Police were there to support the joint event, as was Catch 22’s young ambassador Kaitlyn, aged 8, raising awareness of CSE among other young people and helping them to make their own personal pledges, such as not talking to strangers online or on the street, and always telling parents were they are. The pledges were written on hand-shaped cut-outs and displayed during the event.

There were also three special sessions delivered throughout the day which included a story time for children about internet safety, a parents’ guide to internet safety and a workshop designed for young people aged 11 and upwards.
