Bus station redevelopment work is on cue

The walkway from Preston Bus Station to the Guild Hall has reopened on schedule, ahead of the Grand Prix snooker returning to the city.

It reopened to the public this weekend following renovation work as part of the major redevelopment taking place on the transport hub, which is owned by Lancashire County Council.

County Councillor Keith Iddon, Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We’ve been able to plan this work to fit around some of the busiest times at the Guild Hall, so that it’s reduced the disruption while it was closed.

“It has opened again on schedule, in time for the snooker, which is one of the Guild Hall’s flagship events.

“The redevelopment of the bus station is continuing well. The new concourse is looking good and is now almost finished.

“This work has aimed to keep the Listed aspects of the bus station, while bringing it more up-to-date. For example, we’ve added new toilets and the lighting has been installed, among many improvements.

“We know that there’s been a bit of disruption while this work has been taking place, which we’ve tried hard to keep to a minimum. People are now seeing the result of this work and the improvements we’ve made.”

The car park and stairways have all been refurbished, with all car park levels now open again. New lifts have been installed.

The multi-million pound redevelopment of the bus station has included concrete repairs, removal of asbestos as well as new lighting, fencing and glazing.

A new coach station is being created at the south end of the building, towards the Guild Hall, with external coach bays and new facilities within the bus station itself.

The concourse has been extensively refurbished and the bus stands have all been relocated to the east side of the building, adding more seating and freeing up space to make it easier for people to get around.

The former subways have been filled in, to reduce anti-social behaviour. Better lighting has been added in the bus station concourse, stairways and car park levels. CCTV has also been upgraded to cover more areas of the bus station.

A new stand-alone youth zone is also planned for the site, located on a new public square on the city centre side of the building. This new square will also include outdoor seating and will improve access to and from the bus station.
