Sunday Times best-selling author, Carol Drinkwater, visited St Helens last Friday evening (28 July) to talk about her life as a successful author, actress… and farmer.

Known for her award-winning portrayal of Helen Herriot in the television adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small; for her five part documentary film series, The Olive Route; and for her novels and stories about her life as an olive farmer in Provence – Carol was invited down to Chester Lane Library.

In front of an audience of 45 people, she talked with St Helens Council’s Head of Libraries Service, Sue Williamson, about her experiences as a writer, farmer and actress and her work with UNESCO to help fund an Olive Heritage Trail around the Mediterranean – and also gave a talk about her latest novel, The Lost Girl.

The evening was a memorable occasion, giving audience members the opportunity to take part in a question and answer session with Carol and buy signed copies of her books, including The Lost Girl – a heart-rending story of loss and enduring love – at the end of the event.

Hailing the evening a success, Sue Williamson said: “What a fantastic evening we had welcoming a truly remarkable lady into one of our libraries to talk about her fascinating life as a successful actress, farmer and author.

“As a Library Service, I’m delighted that we are able to host events like this, and given our recent success in securing significant funding on the back of achieving Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisation status, we are in a strong position going forward as we look to further improve our already fantastic cultural programme for public enjoyment.”
