A celebration of talent at the Lancashire Open Exhibition

A vibrant collection of works by accomplished artists from across the UK has been brought together for the prestigious Lancashire Open Exhibition at the Chapel Gallery.

The superb annual exhibition was unveiled to the public on Saturday 22 July and will be open at the West Lancashire Borough Council-run gallery until Wednesday 6 September.

Formerly known as the West Lancashire Exhibition, this celebration of colour, technique and imagination gives visitors the chance to see a variety of inspiring works created by talented individuals in a wide range of media.

All the works were judged by guest selectors including Jack Doyle, an artist and curator and Director at PS Mirabel Manchester; and Tony Smith, an artist and curator and lecturer at Liverpool Hope University. Artworks. Several works of art received commendations and the overall winners were:

  • Student Prize £150: Olivia Maddocks (from Wrexham), Her artwork was called Stripe 2, 2017
  • Sculpture Prize £150: Polly Tomlinson (Halsall), ‘Bitumen’
  • Third Prize £200: Michael Kirby (from Kirkby), ‘Untitled’
  • Second Prize £400: Joint second (shared £200 each), Nick Sykes (Manchester), ‘We Never Thought We Could Lose’, and Jo Swift, Wirral, ‘The Loop’
  • First Prize £800: Lucie Wilson (Bolton), Fragility

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “Congratulations to all the prize winners and good luck to them in the future. This is a challenging time for the arts so the fact that this exhibition continues to develop from strength to strength is testament to the passion and commitment of the artists exhibited. Visitors will find work from established professionals through to students and amateurs with ambition.”

The Open is one of the gallery’s most popular exhibitions, where there is something for everyone to enjoy. This exhibition offers an excellent opportunity for any would-be art collectors. The artworks range from small scale watercolours, prints and photography to large scale contemporary oil paintings, 3D works and textiles. They can be purchased at very reasonable prices.

Visitors can also place their votes for the People’s Prize winner when they visit and be in with a chance to win a fantastic prize.

The gallery, on St Helens Road, is open from 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday. The gallery also has a café and craft shop, and admission is free.
