The 70th anniversary of VE Day will be commemorated this year throughout the country and West Lancashire Borough Council is planning its own tributes.

The Second World War in Europe officially ended on Friday 8th May 1945, however the war against Japan continued for a further few months. There are events being planned to mark the occasion across the anniversary weekend, these planned events include a service at the Cenotaph in London on Friday 8th May. There will also be a star-studded 1940s style concert being held on Horse Guards Parade in London, which will be televised on Saturday 9th May.

West Lancashire Borough Council are planning on paying tribute to the men and women who served their country during the Second World War by lighting up the Ormskirk Clock Tower in red, white and blue. The lights are scheduled to be lit on Friday 8th May and they will remain lit for the weekend.

The Council are planning on planting two oak trees, placing one on either side of the War Memorial in Ormskirk’s Coronation Park; they will serve as a long-lasting reminder of the anniversary. The mayor, the Leader of the Council and the Leader of the Opposition will all be invited to attend the ceremony in Coronation Park on Saturday 9th May in the presence of the veterans, to mark the trees being planted.
